This plant has a very interesting way of growing. In the spring, between April and May, it grows small yellow-green flowers. The plant is dioecious, which means there are separate male and female plants. People can actually eat the male flowers, which are called hana-sanshō. The female flowers grow into small berries or peppercorns about 5mm wide. In the autumn, these berries turn bright red and burst open. This action scatters the black seeds inside to grow new plants.

Many different kinds of this plant exist. One variety is called Z. piperitum var. inerme Makino. This version is special because it is nearly thornless. People grow this version a lot for making food. Another type is called the hairy chopi. The plant also has sharp thorns on its branches. It has leaves with bumpy edges that grow in pairs. These leaves are a home for the citrus butterfly.

People use every part of this plant in many ways. In Japan, the ground berries are used on broiled eel. They are also in a spice mix called shichimi. Young leaves are used in soups and salads. In Korea, dried chopi fruit is put in loach soup or fish stew. People even use the leaves to make pancakes or fritters.

Some people even use the fruit to catch fish. The fruit is poisonous to small fish in ponds.

The strong taste of the plant comes from special parts. These parts are called sanshool and sanshoamide. It also has aromatic oils like geraniol and citral. In Japan, the thick wood is used to make a tool called a suribachi pestle. This tool helps grind food. Some people even make sweet rice cakes with the flavor. It is a plant that connects nature to many delicious meals.
