Long ago, the Maya civilization lived in this region. They reached a peak of development here. The Maya founded many important cities. These include Chichén Itzá and Izamal. They also built Motul, Mayapan, and Ek' Balam. One city was called Ichkanzihóo, which is now Mérida.

The name of the area might come from the Maya word "mayab." This word means "flat." Another idea is that Yucatán means "land of yucas." The yucca is a plant that provided food for the Maya.

Spanish explorers arrived in the area in 1517. An expedition led by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba made landfall. They may have landed at Isla Mujeres or Cabo Catoche.

Later, the Montejo family led a conquest of the land. Francisco de Montejo "el Mozo" founded Mérida in 1542. He built the city on the ruins of Ichkanzihóo. The Spanish used stones from old Maya buildings for new ones. This helped them build their new cities.

History in Yucatán has seen many changes in rule. After the Spanish arrived, it became a single political entity. In 1821, Yucatán declared independence from Spain. It briefly joined the First Mexican Empire in December 1821. Later, it formed the first Republic of Yucatán in 1823. The state even declared independence from Mexico in 1841. It finally rejoined Mexico on July 14, 1848. This happened during a time of conflict called the Caste War.

Today, Yucatán is one of the 32 federal entities of Mexico. The state has changed shape over many years. In 1858, the state was divided to create Campeche. This became an independent state in 1863. Later, in 1902, the state was divided again. This created the territory that is now Quintana Roo. You can still see the deep history in the land. The Maya language and culture remain a very important part of the region.

The history of this region began long before modern borders existed. Evidence from the Loltún caves and Tulum suggests humans lived here during the late Pleistocene. This was the ice age, roughly 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. The Maya people moved into the peninsula around 250 CE. They came from the Petén region, which is in modern northern Guatemala. These early settlers established many famous cities. These included Chichén Itzá, Izamal, Motul, Mayapan, and Ek' Balam. The city of Ichkanzihóo was also a major center. This site is where the modern city of Mérida stands today.

Different groups of Maya shaped the land over many centuries. In 525 CE, a group called the Chanés moved to the eastern peninsula. They founded several important settlements. Later, a group called the Tutul Xiúes arrived from the Gulf of Mexico coast. These people were of Toltec descent. Their arrival caused the displacement of the Itza and the Cocomes. Eventually, these different groups formed the League of Mayapan. This league included the Itza, the Xiús, and the Cocomes. The league lasted until it disintegrated around 1194. This left the region divided into small, separate domains.

European exploration changed the course of the region's history. In 1517, an expedition led by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba reached the peninsula. They sailed from La Habana and moved southwest through the Yucatán Channel. Explorers may have landed at Isla Mujeres. Others, like Bernal Díaz del Castillo, believed they landed at Cabo Catoche. The Spanish conquest was a long and difficult process. It was led by Francisco de Montejo "el Adelantado" and his family. His son, "el Mozo," founded the city of San Francisco de Campeche in 1540. He also founded Mérida in 1542. The Spanish built Mérida directly over the ruins of Ichkanzihóo. They even used stones from old Maya buildings to construct their new ones.

The name "Yucatán" has several possible origins from the era of Spanish contact. One theory suggests it came from a misunderstanding of the Maya language. The Maya might have said "uh yu ka t'ann," meaning "hear how they talk." Another theory involves the phrase "Ma'anaatik ka t'ann." This means "I do not understand your speech." The friar Toribio de Benavente Motolinía recorded a version where the Maya said "Tectetán." This meant "I don't understand you." A third explanation comes from Bernal Díaz del Castillo. He suggested the name meant "land of yucas." The yucca is a plant that was a vital food source for the Maya.

Political independence was a major theme for Yucatán in the 19th century. After the Spanish conquest, the region was part of a single political entity. In 1821, Yucatán declared independence from Spain. It briefly joined the First Mexican Empire in December 1821. When the empire collapsed in 1823, Yucatán formed its own Republic. This first Republic voluntarily joined the United Mexican States later that year. However, political conflicts led to a second Republic of Yucatán in 1841. This period of independence ended in 1848. The Caste War, a period of social upheaval, forced the state to rejoin Mexico.

Over time, the borders of the state changed through several divisions. In 1858, the state was divided to create Campeche. This new state became officially independent in 1863. Later, in 1902, the state was divided again during the Porfiriato. This division created a federal territory. That territory eventually became the modern state of Quintana Roo. Today, the cultural heritage of the Maya remains strong. The Yucatec Maya language is still spoken in the region.
