He cared deeply about the ideas in his stories. He wanted to show social and political issues through his art. This made his films very meaningful to the people who watched them.

Making a film involves many careful steps and skills. Yu was known for his brilliant camera work. This means he knew exactly how to move the camera to show emotion. In 1963, a festival in San Francisco showed his film Obaltan. Experts there praised his rich characterizations. This means he made the people in his movies feel like real humans. He also used a style that some call modernist or expressionistic. These are ways of using art to show deep feelings.

Yu's journey in film began many years ago. He was born in Sariwon in 1925. At that time, his home was part of the Empire of Japan. He made his very first movie in 1956. That film was called Gyocharo, or The Crossroads. He spent many decades creating different kinds of stories. He worked through many changes in his country. His long career showed his true dedication to the art of film.

Yu worked on many different projects during his life. He directed many films like Descendants of Cain in 1968. That film won him a Blue Dragon Film Award. He also directed Flame in 1975, which won a Grand Bell Award. He was not just a director of live movies. He also helped make the animated film Robot Taekwon V in 1976. This helped the world of Korean animation grow much larger. He even taught film to students at Dongguk University.

His hard work earned him many great honors. The Korean government gave him the Gold Crown award in 2009. This is a very high level of the Order of Cultural Merit. He also won a special award in 2003 for his art. In 1999, a festival held a retrospective to look back at his whole career. This means they showed many of his old films together. Yu died on June 28, 2009, after suffering a stroke. He left behind a huge legacy for all filmmakers.
