geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Yongin is a major city located in the Seoul Metropolitan Area. It sits in the southern part of Gyeonggi Province in South Korea. The city is an inland location, meaning it is not near the coast. Yongin is a multi-nuclear city. This means it does not have just one single center. Instead, it has multiple urban centers spread across its area. The city is divided into three administrative districts, known as gu. These are the Suji District, the Giheung District, and the Cheoin District.

The geography of Yongin is characterized by different levels of development. The Suji and Giheung districts are highly urbanized. These areas are densely populated and very developed. In contrast, the Cheoin District is semi-urbanized. This means it has a mix of urban and more rural features. The city's climate is described as a humid continental climate. This is because of its inland position. The average yearly temperature is 11.6 °C. In January, the average temperature drops to -3.1 °C. In August, the average temperature rises to 25.1 °C. The city receives an average yearly precipitation of 1,300mm.

Yongin has experienced massive growth in recent years. The population surpassed 1 million people in 2017. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the city has developed very rapidly. In fact, it has recorded the highest population growth of any city in South Korea. This growth is supported by an advanced transportation network. Many residents commute to downtown Seoul. The trip takes about 30 to 40 minutes by car using the Gyeongbu Expressway or the Yongin-Seoul Expressway. The city is also connected by several subway lines. The Bundang Line connects to the EverLine Rapid Transit System at Giheung Station. This allows passengers to transfer without leaving the station.

Transportation efficiency is a key part of life in Yongin. The Shinbundang Line is a very fast subway line. In January 2016, the line was extended to the Suji District. This allows residents to reach Gangnam Station in just 25 minutes. Another important connection is the Bundang Line extension. In December 2013, this line was extended to Suwon Station. This connects Yongin to Seoul Subway Line 1. Additionally, the GTX-A higher-speed rail serves the city. It runs through Guseong Station and was completed in 2025. These connections help the city function as part of the larger metropolitan area.

Historically, humans have lived in this area for a long time. There is evidence of settlement dating back to the fifth century. However, Yongin only gained official city status in March 1996. Before this, the area was composed of smaller units like myeons and eups. For example, in 1979, Yongin-myeon was promoted to Yongin-eup. In 1985, Giheung-myeon became Giheung-eup. Over the years, some parts of the land were moved into nearby cities. In 1983, some areas were incorporated into Suwon City. In 1983, other parts were incorporated into Pyeongtaek City. In 1995, a large area of Yeongdeok-ri was also added to Suwon City.

Today, Yongin is a global center for the technology industry. It is a major hub for manufacturing memory chips and displays. The city hosts several large branches of Samsung Electronics. The Giheung Campus was Samsung's first semiconductor fabrication plant. It was completed in 1983 and produces DRAM. In 2024, the company finished a new R&D center there. This center cost 20 trillion KRW to build. The South Korean government also approved a massive plan for the city. Samsung plans to invest 300 trillion KRW to build the world's largest semiconductor cluster.

Other major companies are also driving the economy. Samsung Display and Samsung SDI both have a presence in Yongin. Samsung Display completed a new headquarters in 2024. In 2025, the chipmaker SK Hynix announced a huge investment. They plan to invest up to 600 trillion KRW in four fabs. These facilities are located in the southeast of the city. This investment aims to meet the high demand for artificial intelligence technology. These projects together will turn Yongin into the world's largest semiconductor hub. This makes the city vital to the global tech economy.

Beyond industry, Yongin is a center for tourism and education. The city is home to Everland and Caribbean Bay. These are South Korea's most popular amusement and water parks. It also hosts the Korean Folk Village, which is the largest of its kind. For students, there are many university campuses. These include Yong-In University and Dankook University. The Hankuk University of Foreign Studies has a Global Campus in the Cheoin District.
