Goyang is a major city located in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. It serves as a vital satellite city within the Seoul Metropolitan Area. This means it is closely connected to the capital city of Seoul. With a population exceeding 1 million people, it is one of the largest cities in this metropolitan region.

The city is divided into three distinct administrative districts. These are the Ilsandong District, the Ilsanseo District, and the Deogyang District. The Ilsan area is a planned city that includes both the Ilsandong and Ilsanseo districts. The Deogyang District is situated closer to the city of Seoul. This division helps organize the large population and various urban services.

Geography plays a huge role in the shape and character of Goyang. The city covers a total area of 286.1 square kilometers. Its boundaries are defined by natural landmarks. To the east, the Bukhansan mountain range forms a border. To the west, the Han River marks the edge of the city. Across the Han River lies the city of Gimpo. Because of how the land is shaped by the mountains and the river, the administrative borders of Goyang vaguely resemble a kitchen knife.

The climate in Goyang is classified as a monsoon-influenced humid continental climate. This is also known by the Köppen climate classification Dwa. This means the city experiences two very different types of weather. The winters are typically cold and dry. In contrast, the summers are hot and rainy. People in the city often look at Bukhansan Mountain to help estimate the daily weather. If the mountain is clearly visible from places like Jichuk, it provides a clue about the atmospheric conditions.

Goyang is also a significant center for higher education and culture. Several institutions of higher learning are located here. These include the Korea Aerospace University, the Agricultural Cooperative College, and the Transnational Law and Business University. The city's history is preserved in many notable sites. These include the Seosamneung and Seooreung Royal Tombs, which are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Other historical landmarks include the Bukhansanseong Fortress and the Haengju seowon, a Confucian Academy.

Festivals are a major part of life in Goyang and draw many visitors. The Goyang International Flower Festival takes place every April near Ilsan Lake Park. This event grew from a floricultural industry that began in the early 1970s. The city has become a famous hub for trading flowers both locally and internationally. In October, the city hosts the Goyang Lake Art Festival. This free-style arts festival features jazz, mime, dance, and drama. It often includes large-scale installation arts and colorful fireworks to entertain spectators.

Transportation in Goyang is highly developed to support its large population. The city is connected to Seoul and other areas through a complex network. Residents use subways, such as the GTX-A and Line 3, to travel. There are also commuter rails like the Gyeongui-Jungang Line. For long-distance travel, high-speed KTX trains stop at Haengsin station.

Buses are another essential way to move around the city. Goyang uses a color-coded bus system to help passengers. Yellow buses connect nearby locations. Green and blue buses travel between different cities and districts. Red buses act as express services for longer distances. There are also M buses, which are even more express than the red buses. For shorter trips, the city provides bike-sharing systems like Tajo. This variety of transport ensures that the million residents can move efficiently through the metropolitan area.
