A man named Lefty O'Doul suggested the name "Giants." He thought the name fit because Tokyo is like New York. The team also chose orange and black colors. These colors are the same as the New York Giants. Their jersey lettering looks like the old style from the 1930s.

Many great players have worn the Giants uniform. Victor Starffin was a famous pitcher from Russia. He won a record 42 games in 1939. Eiji Sawamura pitched the first no-hitter in Japanese professional baseball. He did this on September 25, 1936. Another great pitcher was Hideo Fujimoto. He threw the first perfect game in the league's history. Tetsuharu Kawakami was also a legend. He was the first player to get 2,000 hits. He won many batting and home run titles.

Some players became superstars around the world. Sadaharu Oh was a famous hitter for the team. He holds the world record for career home runs. He won the most valuable player award nine times. Shigeo Nagashima was another star player. He and Oh were called the "ON Hou." This name means the "Oh-Nagashima Cannon."
