The yolk is the yellow part of an egg.

Its main job is to provide food for a growing baby. This baby is called an embryo. The yolk is full of nutrients like proteins and fats. It also has many vitamins and minerals. For example, it has almost all the calcium and iron in a chicken egg.

In a chicken egg, the yolk is a round ball. It floats in the egg white. Small bands of tissue called chalazae hold the yolk in place.

Other animals use yolk too. Many fish and insects rely on it to grow. In some small fish, the yolk is just inside the egg cell. In other animals, the mother makes a special part to hold the yolk.

Sometimes, eggs look different. A hen might lay an egg with two yolks.

This happens if she lays them too fast. The color can change based on what the mother eats. If she eats green plants, the yolk might be bright yellow. If she eats peppers, the yolk can look red.
