It is a major center for business and culture. The city is part of a large area known as the Greater Tokyo Area.

The city's name tells a story about its shape. Long ago, the area was a gulf divided by a sandbar. This sandbar was a small fishing village. The sandbar stuck out sideways from the land. In Japanese, the word for sideways is "yoko." The word for sandbar is "hama." When you put them together, you get Yokohama.

History changed for Yokohama in the mid-1800s. For a long time, Japan kept to itself and did not trade much with other lands. This changed after American warships arrived in 1853. The port of Yokohama officially opened for trade on June 2, 1859. This made the city a very international place. Many new things arrived in Japan through this port. Yokohama had the first English newspaper in 1861. It also had Japan's first Chinatown and its first railway station in 1872.

Life in the city has not always been easy. Yokohama has faced many natural and man-made disasters. In 1923, a huge earthquake hit the region. This event caused many deaths and injuries. Later, during World War II, the city was hit by air raids. On May 29, 1945, a single morning of bombing destroyed much of the city.

Even after these hard times, the city worked to rebuild itself. It used rubble from the earthquake to create new parks like Yamashita Park.

Today, Yokohama is a place of high technology and bright lights. A large part of the city is called Minato Mirai 21. This area was built on land taken from the sea.
