It sits mostly on the Yilan Plain, which is a flat area made of sand and soil. This plain has a shape that looks like a large triangle. Three main towns sit at the points of this triangle. These towns are Toucheng, Sanxing, and Su-ao. Each side of the triangle is about 30 kilometers long. The land changes as you move from the mountains down to the sea. You will see mountains, valleys, plains, and then the coastline.

Nature works in a very interesting way here. The Lanyang River flows through the area from the mountains. Because the land is steep, the river moves with a fast and strong current. This water carries a lot of silt, which is fine sand and mud. When the river reaches flatter land, it slows down. The sand and gravel settle to the bottom. This creates shapes in the ground called alluvial fans. These fans often look like a web pattern on the ground.

The river can even change its path after heavy rain or floods.

Many different groups of people have called this place home over the years. Long ago, the Kavalan people lived by the rivers. They came by the sea about 1,000 years ago. The Atayal people also lived here. They arrived about 250 years ago by crossing mountain passes. Later, Han Chinese settlers arrived and began farming the land. They built irrigation channels to help their crops grow.

In the 1600s, Spanish and Dutch groups also visited or stayed in parts of Taiwan. Later, the area was part of Japan until 1945. Finally, the present Yilan County was officially formed in 1950.

Today, Yilan is a busy and lively place with many people. It has a population of about 450,031 people. Most people living there are Han Chinese. The county is divided into many different areas like cities and townships. Yilan City is the main center where the local government is located.

There are also several universities for students to study. The area uses renewable energy to help power itself. This includes power from water and geothermal heat from the earth.
