history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Long ago, a man led a great Maya city. His name was Yax Ehb Xook. He was the leader of Tikal. He ruled around the year 90 AD.

His name may mean First Step Shark. He started a line of kings in Tikal. This line is called a dynasty. Later kings called him the founder of their city. This means he was the first great ruler.

We do not have books from his time. We only know him from things found in the dirt. People found a piece of jade. Jade is a green stone. It was a small earflare. His name was carved on that stone.

The stone came from Kaminaljuyu. This place may be where he was born. Some old tombs suggest he did not build the city. He may have become the founder through his work. His rule helped Tikal grow. Tikal became a very important part of the Maya world. It helped start the Classic period. This was a big time for Maya culture.
