The shrine keeps a large list of names. It lists 2,466,532 people. The list includes their birthdates and where they died. It also includes people from Korea and Taiwan.

Some parts of the shrine have special roles. The honden is the main hall. There is also the Chinreisha. This is a building to honor all who died in World War II.

The shrine is a very controversial place.

This is because it honors some war criminals. These were people convicted of crimes during the war. Because of this, many people in East Asia disagree with the shrine. Some Japanese leaders do not visit it. Emperor Hirohito visited eight times. But he stopped visiting after 1975. His successors, Akihito and Naruhito, have never visited. The Japanese government also has many debates about the shrine.
