He is recognized as one of China's most famous international athletes. His career bridged the gap between the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the United States. To many, Yao represented a new, modern, and confident China. In the United States, his massive popularity earned him the nickname "Ming Dynasty." In China, his impact was known as the "Yao Ming Phenomenon."

Yao's journey to professional greatness began with intense discipline and physical growth. Born on September 12, 1980, in Shanghai, he was the child of two former professional basketball players. At birth, he weighed significantly more than the average Chinese newborn. By age nine, he began playing basketball and attending a junior sports school. When he was ten, doctors predicted he would grow to be 7 feet 6 inches tall.

At age 13, he practiced for ten hours every day to join the Shanghai Sharks' junior team.

His professional career progressed through distinct stages in two different countries. First, he played for the Shanghai Sharks' senior team in the CBA for five years. During his final season in China, he averaged 38.9 points and 20.2 rebounds per game. He helped lead the Sharks to their first CBA championship. In 2002, Yao moved to the United States to join the Houston Rockets. He was the first overall pick in the 2002 NBA draft. This made him the first international player selected first overall without playing U.S. college basketball.

In the NBA, Yao became a dominant force through skill and size.

He spent his entire nine-year NBA career with the Houston Rockets. Yao was selected to start for the Western Conference in the NBA All-Star Game eight times. He was also named to the All-NBA Team five times. During his final season, he was the tallest active player in the league. He was particularly effective at the rim, ranking second in total blocks for the Rockets franchise.

Despite his success, Yao's career was shaped by significant physical challenges. The high demands of professional basketball led to a series of foot and ankle injuries. These injuries were severe enough to force him to miss 250 games during his final six seasons. In July 2011, Yao announced his retirement from professional basketball due to these health issues.

Yao's impact extended to the international stage through his work with China's national team. He helped the team win the FIBA Asia Cup in 2001, 2003, and 2005. During those three tournament wins, he was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP). He also earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team at the 2002 FIBA World Cup. Yao continued to represent his country until his retirement from the national team following the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
