Yan Fu was born on January 8, 1854, in Fuzhou, Fujian Province. His family was part of the scholar-gentry class. They worked in the trade of Chinese medicine. His father wanted him to study for the Imperial examination. However, his father died in 1866. This event changed Yan Fu's life path. He entered the Foochow Arsenal Academy in Fuzhou a year later. This was a Western-style school. He studied English, physics, chemistry, and navigation.

After graduating with honors in 1871, Yan Fu worked at sea for five years. He served on the training ship Jianwei and the battlecruiser Yangwu. From 1877 to 1879, he studied at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, England. There, he met Guo Songtao, China's first ambassador. The two men spent many nights discussing Chinese and Western political institutions. This period helped shape his understanding of the world. Upon returning to China, he taught at the Beiyang Naval Officers' School in Tianjin.

Yan Fu became famous after the First Sino-Japanese War ended in 1895. This war was fought for control of Korea. During this time, he translated many major Western works. He translated Thomas Huxley's Evolution and Ethics into Chinese as Tianyan lun.

He also translated Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations. Other works included books by John Stuart Mill and Herbert Spencer. He introduced the concept of natural selection to Chinese readers. He used the term "tianze" to describe this process. His work helped establish Social Darwinism in China.

Translation was a central part of Yan Fu's career. He developed a specific theory for high-quality translation. He believed a translator must achieve three goals. These goals are faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance. In Chinese, this is known as "Xin Da Ya." Some scholars debate if he created this standard. They suggest it might have come from Alexander Fraser Tytler. Despite this, the phrase remains a famous cliché in Chinese academic circles. It is still used to discuss the quality of translations today.

Yan Fu's influence extended to science and politics. He served as the Head of the State Terminology Bureau. In this role, he helped standardize scientific terms in China. He was also politically active in the Gongche Shangshu movement in 1895. This movement opposed the Treaty of Shimonoseki. In his later years, he became a conservative and a royalist. He supported the monarchical ambitions of leaders like Emperor Yuan Shikai. He also helped found the Chouanhui organization to support the monarchy.

Not everyone agreed with Yan Fu's methods or style. Some critics felt his prose was difficult to understand. During the May Fourth Movement, Cai Yuanpei noted that Yan's style seemed old-fashioned. However, Cai still admired the standards Yan used for his books. Other scholars criticized him as they learned more about Western culture. Even with these critiques, his impact on Chinese thought was massive. He helped bridge the gap between Eastern and Western knowledge systems.

Yan Fu died on October 27, 1921, at the age of 67. He had returned to Fuzhou to recover from recurring asthma. His life spanned a period of intense global transition. He moved from a traditional scholar's path to a life of international science and philosophy. Today, National Peking University holds an annual academic conference to honor him. His legacy lives on through the many ideas he brought to China.
