While he was there, a landslide happened on a large river bank. This collapse revealed a hidden space deep under the ground. Inside, he found hundreds of bamboo plants that had turned to stone. Because bamboo needs damp and gloomy places to grow, Shen Kuo realized the climate must have been different in ancient times. This was an early way to understand how the Earth changes.

In the 1930s, Yan'an became a very important center for the Chinese Communist Revolution.

During the Second World War, the city faced many hard times. Japanese bombing destroyed almost all the buildings except for one pagoda. Because of this, most people began living in yaodongs. These are special homes carved directly into the hillsides. While the city was a center for communist life, Western journalists also visited. Even a group from the United States, called the Dixie Mission, came to Yan'an to meet with leaders.

The history of the region stretches back to the ancient Xia dynasty. During the subsequent Shang dynasty, the area was inhabited by the Guifang people. Later, groups like the Quanrong and Xianyun lived there during the Western Zhou period. During the Warring States period, the land was divided between the states of Wei and Qin. Eventually, the Qin state conquered the entire area. When the Qin dynasty was established in 221 BCE, the region became part of Shang Commandery. This administrative structure continued through the Han dynasty.

Over many centuries, the administrative organization of Yan'an changed frequently. During the Northern Wei, the area was split into different commanderies and prefectures. Under the Sui dynasty, it served as a military base. The Tang dynasty transformed the area into an important defensive outpost. In 620 CE, the Tang government replaced local commanderies with prefectures. The Song dynasty also held the region, though the Tangut-led Western Xia dynasty briefly conquered parts of it. In 1089, the area was renamed Yan'an and promoted to a fu, which is a type of administrative division.

A notable scientific discovery occurred in Yan'an during the Song dynasty. In 1080, the polymath Shen Kuo was sent to the area to help with defenses.

While stationed there, he observed a landslide on a large river bank. The collapse revealed an underground space several dozen feet below the ground. Inside, Shen Kuo found hundreds of petrified bamboos with intact roots and trunks. Because bamboo does not grow in this current climate, Shen Kuo deduced that the area was much more damp and gloomy in ancient times. This was a significant observation regarding how climates change over long periods.

The region also faced intense military conflict during the Song dynasty. Shen Kuo successfully defended the territory against the Western Xia in 1081. He captured several fortified towns and earned many titles from Emperor Shenzong. However, an arrogant military officer later disobeyed strategic advice and fortified useless locations. This mistake led to a catastrophic defeat where the death toll reached 60,000 people. Later, the Mongol Empire led by Genghis Khan invaded Shaanxi in 1221. During this time, Mongol and Western Xia forces defeated a Jin army of 30,000 soldiers in the eastern part of Yan'an.

In the modern era, Yan'an underwent massive demographic and political shifts. During the Qing dynasty, much of the rural area was inhabited by Chinese Muslims. However, the Dungan Revolt between 1862 and 1877 led to massacres and forced relocations. This caused the local economy to crash and populations to drop sharply. For example, the population of Bao'an fell from 51,000 in 1823 to only 170 in 1868. Following the fall of the Qing dynasty, Yan'an became part of the Republic of China. By the 1930s, the city became the heart of the Chinese Communist movement.

After the Long March ended in 1935, communist forces arrived in the region. By 1937, the Red Army entered Yan'an without a fight. The city became the seat of the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region government.
