Shaanxi is a major province located in northwestern China. It is the 16th largest province in the country. About 37 million people live in this region. Shaanxi serves as a vital cultural and economic hub. It is often called a cradle of Chinese civilization. This is because many early Chinese dynasties began or ruled here. The province is home to diverse landscapes and important industries. It connects ancient history with modern high-technology sectors.

The geography of Shaanxi is divided into three distinct parts. The northern part is called Shaanbei. This region sits on the Loess Plateau within the Ordos Basin. It includes the cities of Yulin and Yan'an. The Ming Great Wall marks its border with Inner Mongolia. Central Shaanxi is known as the Guanzhong region. It lies in the drainage basin of the lower Wei River. Most of the province's population lives in this central area. This region sits between Mount Liupan and the Qinling Mountains.

The southern part, or Shaannan, is a mountainous area. It lies south of the Qinling Mountains. This part includes the cities of Hanzhong, Ankang, and Shangluo.

Climate varies greatly across these three geographic zones. The northern Loess Plateau has a cold, arid climate. This means it has very dry winters and hot, humid summers. Central Shaanxi is mostly semi-arid. It can experience early-season heatwaves during the summer. The southern portion of the province is much more humid. It sits in a subtropical zone with temperate winters.

The city of Xianyang was the capital for the Qin dynasty from 221 to 206 BC. Even older history exists in the province. Scientists found fossils of Lantian Man in Lantian County. These fossils belong to a subspecies of Homo erectus. They date back approximately one million years.

The province was also a key part of the ancient Silk Road. Xi'an served as the eastern terminus of this famous trade route. The Northern Silk Road was about 4,000 kilometers long. It connected Xi'an to the west through the Wushao Ling Pass. This route eventually linked China to Parthia, the Arabian Peninsula, and Europe. During the Ming dynasty, most visitors from West Asia entered China through Shaanxi. This made the province a major center for international exchange.

In more recent history, Shaanxi played a role in the Chinese Revolution. The city of Yan'an was near the end of the Long March. The Chinese Red Army fled to this area after the Chinese Soviet Republic was destroyed. From late 1935 to early 1947, Yan'an became the birthplace of the revolution. The Communists formed the Shaan-Gan-Ning Border Region here. This period changed the political landscape of modern China forever.

Today, Shaanxi is a significant economic power in China. It ranks as the 15th largest economy in the country. The province focuses on two main industries: fossil fuels and high technology. The high-technology sector is particularly advanced in aerospace. Shaanxi produces more than 50% of China's domestic commercial aviation equipment.
