history Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Yamnaya culture was a group of people who lived a long time ago. They lived on the Pontic-Caspian steppe, which is a huge area of flat land. This area sits between the Southern Bug, Dniester, and Ural rivers.

They lived during the late Copper Age and early Bronze Age. This was between 3300 and 2600 BC. Archaeologists find them very important today. They help us understand how many modern languages began.

Life for the Yamnaya was always on the move. They were nomads or semi-nomads, so they did not stay in one place. They moved around to look after large herds of animals. They used two-wheeled carts and four-wheeled wagons to carry things.

Some people think they even rode horses to help manage their animals. They also spent time fishing and gathering food from the wild. They were good at making tools, weapons, and ceramic pots.

A scientist named Vasily Gorodtsov first discovered this culture. He did his work near the Donets River between 1901 and 1903. The name Yamnaya comes from a Russian word. It describes how they buried their dead in pits. They often put these pits under large mounds called kurgans.

Some graves were very special and held large stone markers. These markers sometimes had carved human faces or arms. Some elite people were even buried with complete wooden wagons.

Scientists have learned a lot about the Yamnaya through DNA. They were a mix of two different groups of hunter-gatherers. One group was from Eastern Europe. The other group came from the Caucasus mountains.

This mix is sometimes called Steppe ancestry. They also had some DNA from farmers in Anatolia or the Levant.

Recent studies show they were quite tall for ancient people. They may have also carried a gene that helped them digest milk.

The Yamnaya left a huge mark on the world. Many linguists believe they spoke Proto-Indo-European. This was an early stage of a very important language family. As they moved, their language spread to many different places. This led to the many Indo-European languages we speak today.

Their culture also connected to later groups like the Corded Ware people. They also influenced the Sintashta and Andronovo cultures. The Yamnaya story is a big part of human history.
