Long ago, between 3300 and 2600 BC, a group of people lived on the big plains. We call them the Yamnaya.

The Yamnaya were nomads. This means they moved from place to place. They did not stay in one spot for long. They moved with their large herds of animals. They used two-wheeled carts and four-wheeled wagons to travel.

Some people may have even ridden horses to help manage their animals.

These people had a special way of burying their dead. They used simple pit graves. They often placed these graves under large mounds called kurgans.

Some graves even had wooden wagons inside.

Scientists study the Yamnaya to learn about old languages. Many think they spoke an early form of Proto-Indo-European. This language helped lead to many languages we use today. The Yamnaya were also a mix of two different groups of hunter-gatherers. One group came from Eastern Europe. The other group came from the Caucasus. This mix helped them become a strong culture on the steppe.
