Transportation in this frozen region is quite unique. In 2011, workers completed the Obskaya–Bovanenkovo railway. This line is 572 km long. It is currently the northernmost railway in the world. 
Recent years have seen the appearance of strange sinkholes. In 2014, a large crater appeared on the peninsula. Some people guessed it was a meteorite or a UFO. However, experts from the Emergencies Ministry ruled out a meteorite. Many researchers now point to cryovolcanism as the cause. This involves the movement of volatiles like water or gas. Andrei Plekhanov suggests that warming regional temperatures cause pressure to build up underground. This pressure can lead to a sudden explosion.
This process involves the destabilization of gas hydrates. Gas hydrates are frozen structures that contain large amounts of methane. When they destabilize, they release methane gas. This release can cause the ground to collapse into a crater. As of 2015, researchers found at least five such craters. Another one appeared in August 2020. Researchers also study methane leaks in the Kara Sea. They believe geothermal heat flux is thawing the permafrost under the seabed. This thawing allows methane to leak into the ocean.
