In 1900, the British Empire tried to take control. A British leader demanded the Golden Stool. This was very wrong to the Ashanti people. Yaa Asantewaa stood up to the men in her council. She urged them to fight for their freedom. She became the war leader for 5,000 people. This was the first time a woman led the Ashanti in war.

The war lasted for six months. It was a very hard time. Many people lost their lives in the fighting. The British eventually won the war. They sent Yaa Asantewaa away to a place called the Seychelles. She lived there in exile until she died in 1921. Today, people in Ghana honor her as a hero. They have a museum and a school named after her.
