Wrist

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The wrist is a busy and complex part of your body. It connects your hand to your forearm. You can think of the wrist in a few different ways. Some people define it as a group of eight small bones called carpals. Others see it as the joint where your forearm bones meet your hand. It is also the whole area around these bones. This area includes the carpal tunnel and several other small parts.

Many parts work together to make the wrist move. The radiocarpal joint is an ellipsoid joint. This means it is shaped like an egg. It connects the radius bone to the first row of carpal bones. There is also a pivot joint called the distal radioulnar joint. This joint sits between the radius and the ulna. It helps you turn your hand over and over.

How do these parts move so well? Muscles in your forearm pull on long strings called tendons. These tendons pass through a narrow path called the carpal tunnel. To keep them from popping out, bands called retinacula hold them down. Stronger bands called ligaments hold the bones together. These ligaments connect the many joints in your wrist.

Your bones start growing very early in life. This hardening of bone is called ossification. In the first six months of an infant's life, two bones begin to ossify. These are the capitate and the hamate bones. Doctors can even look at wrist bones to see a child's bone age.

Sometimes the wrist can get hurt or feel pain. A wrist fracture often happens to the distal radius bone. This is a break near the end of the radius. Many things can cause wrist pain. These include things like carpal tunnel syndrome or osteoarthritis. Even the name "wrist" has a long history. It comes from an old word that meant twisting.
