Winter Sonata is a famous South Korean television drama series. It is the second part of a seasonal tetralogy titled Endless Love. This series was directed by Yoon Seok-ho. The drama follows a complex story of love, memory, and loss. It aired on the KBS2 network in 2002. The show consists of 20 episodes. It originally aired on Mondays and Tuesdays at 21:55 KST.

The story begins in the rural city of Chuncheon. The protagonist is Kang Joon-sang, played by Bae Yong-joon. He is the son of an eminent musician. Joon-sang is a talented but introverted teenager. He meets a classmate named Jeong Yoo-jin, played by Choi Ji-woo. Their friendship grows until they fall in love. However, a tragic car accident changes everything. The accident causes brain damage and amnesia. Joon-sang loses all memories of his past life.

To help Joon-sang start over, his mother takes drastic steps. She uses a hypnotist to erase his painful childhood memories. This process is intended to help him forget his status as an illegitimate child. She then moves him to the United States. There, he lives under a new identity named Lee Min-hyung. He grows up to be a successful, open-minded architect. Ten years later, Min-hyung returns to South Korea. This return brings him face-to-face with Yoo-jin again.

The plot becomes complicated through several different characters. Yoo-jin is engaged to her childhood friend, Kim Sang-hyuk. Meanwhile, Min-hyung is dating Oh Chae-rin. Chae-rin is actually a former rival of Yoo-jin. The tension increases when Yoo-jin's interior design firm works with Min-hyung's architectural firm. Yoo-jin begins to suspect that Min-hyung is actually her lost love, Joon-sang. Chae-rin attempts to protect her relationship by lying about Yoo-jin. Eventually, Min-hyung overhears a conversation that exposes the truth.

Winter Sonata had a massive impact on international culture. It is credited with causing the second wave of the Korean Wave. This term refers to the global spread of South Korean culture. The series helped extend this wave to Japan and the Philippines. It even reached Malaysia, Indonesia, and Nepal. In the Philippines, it aired as Endless Love II. In Malaysia, it was known as Kisah Cinta Musim Salju. The show helped improve the image of South Korea across East Asia.

The commercial success of the show was enormous. It sold 330,000 DVDs to viewers. Additionally, 1,200,000 copies of the novelizations were sold. The series also boosted tourism significantly. Much of the filming took place on the resort island of Namiseom. Before the show aired, Namiseom had 250,000 visitors. After the series aired, that number grew to over 650,000 visitors. A statue of the main characters now stands on the island. It marks the exact spot where the characters first kissed.

Bae Yong-joon became a massive star across Asia because of this role. In 2004, he visited Japan and was met by over 3,000 women. This crowd was so large that 350 policemen were needed for security. Even the Japanese prime minister, Junichiro Koizumi, commented on his popularity. The series has also been adapted into other formats. An anime series premiered in Japan in 2009. This version had 26 episodes and featured 23 members of the original cast. There is even a plan to release a 4K remastered film in 2026.
