Choi Ji-woo is a celebrated South Korean actress known for her immense popularity across Asia. Born Choi Mi-hyang on June 11, 1975, she has become a symbol of beauty and talent in her home country. Her career spans several decades and includes a wide variety of genres. She is particularly famous for her work in melodramas, which are emotional stories often centered on romance or tragedy. She has also successfully transitioned into romantic comedies, showing her versatility as a performer. Through her many roles, she has helped shape the global perception of South Korean entertainment.

Her professional journey began through a talent audition organized by the broadcaster MBC in 1994. Following this win, she made her acting debut in the 1995 drama series War and Love. It was during this early period that she adopted her stage name, Choi Ji-woo. Her early years involved a mix of television dramas and films. In 1996, she was cast in a major role in the film The Gate of Destiny. However, she was replaced during filming due to limited acting skills at that time. She continued to build her craft through roles in films like The Hole and various romantic comedies.

Choi's rise to superstardom was driven by her portrayal of specific character types. She became widely popular for playing tragic heroines who possessed a pure and innocent image. Notable examples include her roles in the series Truth and Beautiful Days. A major turning point occurred in 2002 when she starred in the drama Winter Sonata. Directed by Yoon Seok-ho, this series was the second installment of his "season dramas." This production became a phenomenal hit throughout Asia and is credited as an initiator of the Hallyu, or Korean Wave. This phenomenon refers to the rapid spread of South Korean culture worldwide.

In Japan, Choi achieved a level of fame that earned her the nickname "Ji-woo Hime," meaning "Princess Ji-woo." She became a massive commercial brand in the Japanese market. She earned high licensing and broadcasting rights for her dramas and sold out various concerts and merchandise. In 2009, she even returned to her most famous role by providing voice acting for the Winter Sonata anime. Her influence extended to the film industry as well. After the success of the 2003 melodrama Stairway to Heaven, she attempted to break into cinema with films like Now and Forever and Everybody Has Secrets. While these films received mixed reviews in South Korea, they performed well at the Japanese box office.

As her career progressed, Choi sought to expand her professional reach and influence. In 2009, she starred in the drama Star's Lover, playing a top actress in love with an ordinary man. For this role, she earned the highest per-episode salary for a Korean actress at that time. That same year, she demonstrated her business acumen by founding her own management agency, C,JW Company. Her brother serves as the CEO of this organization. She also participated in the semi-improvisational mockumentary film Actresses, which is considered one of her most significant cinematic works. This period marked her transition from a specialized melodrama actress to a broader entertainer.

Choi has actively worked to break away from her established "pure" image. During a 2011 press conference for the series Can't Lose, she expressed a desire to become a "romantic comedy queen." She noted that she had maintained the same image for 15 years and wanted to show a more cheerful side. She achieved this through roles in series like Twenty Again, where she played a housewife entering college. She also explored different tones in The Suspicious Housekeeper, playing a stoic and capable character. Her ability to balance these different personas has allowed her to remain a relevant and lucrative star for many years.

Beyond acting, Choi has engaged in diverse media projects that promote Korean culture. In 2012, she hosted the five-episode travel show Choi Ji-woo's Delicious Korea. Alongside fashion designer Jung Kuho, she traveled through South Korea to introduce regional foods to a global audience. This role highlighted her ability to act as a cultural ambassador. Her personal life also garnered public interest. She married her partner in a private ceremony on March 29, 2018. She later announced her pregnancy in late 2019 and gave birth to a daughter in May 2020. Her enduring career continues to influence the landscape of Asian media.
