In the late 1990s, the modern wingsuit was truly born. A man from France named Patrick de Gayardon helped develop it. In 1997, Sammy Popov built a suit with a larger wing between the legs. He tested his design in a wind tunnel in Las Vegas. Another builder, Chuck Raggs, added hard ribs to help the wings keep their shape. By 1999, Jari Kuosma helped make wingsuits safer for everyone. He started a company called Birdman to teach new pilots.

Performance in wingsuit flying is often measured by the glide ratio. This ratio compares the horizontal distance traveled to the vertical distance dropped. While older suits from the 1990s often had a ratio of 2:1, modern advancements allow pilots to achieve a ratio of 3:1 or more.
