Wind power

technology Maturity 9-11 Vital Level 3 Next article →

Wind power is a way to use moving air to do useful work.

For a long time, people used wind for sails or windmills. Today, we mostly use it to make electricity. This is done using wind turbines.

These machines are often grouped together in large areas called wind farms. Wind power is a renewable energy source. This means it comes from a source that will not run out. It also has a much smaller impact on our world than burning fossil fuels.

How does a wind turbine work?

Wind is moving air in our atmosphere. When the wind blows, it hits the blades of a turbine. Most large turbines have three blades attached to a part called a nacelle. This nacelle sits on top of a tall tower. The moving blades turn a shaft inside the machine. This movement helps create electricity through a generator. The amount of power we get depends on the wind speed. If the wind speed doubles, the available power actually increases eightfold.

People have been using wind for many years. In the past, we saw windmills and windpumps. Now, we build massive wind farms to power whole cities.

Some wind farms are built on land, which are called onshore farms. Others are built in the sea and are called offshore wind farms.

Offshore farms can catch stronger and more frequent winds. They also do not change the look of the land as much as onshore farms. However, building them in the water is more expensive. The Hornsea Wind Farm in the United Kingdom is the largest offshore farm. It has a capacity of 1,218 MW.

Wind power is growing very fast around the world.

In 2024, wind supplied about 2,500 TWh of electricity. This was over 8% of all electricity in the world. Global wind power capacity has exceeded 800 GW. In 2021, about 100 GW of new capacity was added. Most of this growth happened in China and the United States.

In 2024, 30 different countries got more than a tenth of their electricity from wind. Wind generation has nearly tripled since the year 2015. Analysts say we must expand even faster to meet the Paris Agreement goals.

Wind power works very well with other types of energy.

For example, wind is often stronger at night or during the winter. This is a great time when solar power output is low. Using them together helps keep the electricity supply steady. Wind is also one of the lowest-cost ways to make electricity. In many places, new onshore wind farms are cheaper than coal or gas plants.

Even though wind can change, we can use energy storage to help. This makes the power supply more reliable for everyone.
