Despite these setbacks, Messerschmitt achieved incredible success during the 1930s. He designed the Bf 108, a four-seater monoplane, with Robert Lusser. He then used features from that plane to create the Bf 109 fighter. The Bf 109 became the most important fighter for the Luftwaffe. It remains the second most-produced warplane in history, with roughly 34,000 units built. He also designed the Me 209, which broke the absolute world airspeed record. He was also accused of using forced labor from concentration camps. These camps included Flossenbürg, Dachau, and Gusen. While the full extent of his involvement is unclear, he served two years in prison.

After his release, Messerschmitt continued to work in the aviation industry. He moved to Spain in 1952 to design the Hispano HA-200 jet trainer. He eventually returned to Germany in 1955 to lead Messerschmitt AG. During the years when Germany could not build planes, his company made sewing machines and small cars. His last aircraft design was the Helwan HA-300 for Egypt. His company later merged to become part of Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm. This organization eventually became part of the modern aerospace company Airbus.
