He was a novelist, a playwright, and a screenwriter. He wrote sixteen novels and many scripts for the big screen. His work was loved by millions of people around the world. Some people said his writing was very smart. He liked to make stories that surprised his readers. He did not just write for money, but to make real art.

Writing a screenplay is a special way to tell a story. A screenwriter writes the words and actions that actors use in a movie. Goldman often turned his own books into movies. For example, he wrote the novel The Princess Bride in 1973. Later, he adapted that same book into a famous film.
