He drew inspiration from films like the French movie Z, directed by Costa-Gavras. This approach made his fictional stories feel urgent and authentic. He often adapted stage plays into cinematic experiences. For example, he directed the psychological horror film Bug and the crime film Killer Joe. This allowed him to translate complex theatrical performances for a wide film audience.

Friedkin's career began with a focus on non-fiction storytelling. He started in the mail room at WBKB-TV immediately after high school. By the age of 18, he was already directing live television and documentaries. One significant early work was The People vs. Paul Crump in 1962. This documentary won an award at the San Francisco International Film Festival. It even helped contribute to the commutation of a death sentence. These early successes led him to work with producer David L. Wolper.

His most influential period occurred during the 1970s. In 1971, he released the crime thriller The French Connection. This film won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. In 1973, he directed The Exorcist, based on a novel by William Peter Blatty. This film revolutionized the horror genre and received ten Academy Award nominations. It won for Best Sound and Best Screenplay. During this time, Friedkin was considered one of the premier directors of his era.

Friedkin also explored various genres and styles throughout his life. He directed the drama The Boys in the Band in 1970, which is a milestone of queer cinema. He also directed the thriller Sorcerer in 1977. Although it was a financial failure, Friedkin considered it his finest film. He later directed the neo-noir thriller To Live and Die in L.A. in 1985. He even ventured into music videos for artists like Barbra Streisand. His versatility allowed him to move between high drama and commercial projects.

His personal life and early years shaped his perspective. Friedkin was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 29, 1935. His parents were Jewish emigrants from the Russian empire. They had fled a violent anti-Jewish pogrom in 1903. Friedkin grew up in a lower middle class household. He was a talented basketball player at Senn High School. He graduated from high school at the age of 16. These formative years in Chicago provided the foundation for his later career.

Even in his later years, Friedkin remained a dedicated creator. He worked extensively as an opera director from 1998 until his death. His final feature film was The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial. This film was released in September 2023, just two months after he passed away. He also directed episodes for the television series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. His career spanned many decades and many different forms of art. He remains a significant figure in the history of American film.
