It was directed by William Friedkin and written by William Peter Blatty. The story is based on Blatty's 1971 novel of the same name. The plot focuses on the demonic possession of a 12-year-old girl named Regan MacNeil. Two Catholic priests attempt to save her through a ritual called an exorcism. This film is recognized for its massive impact on popular culture. It was even selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry. This selection happened in 2010 because the film is culturally and historically significant.

The narrative follows several interconnected paths to build tension. In northern Iraq, Father Lankester Merrin discovers a stone talisman during an archaeological dig in Hatra. This discovery sets a tone of ancient, supernatural concern. Meanwhile, in Washington, D.C., actress Chris MacNeil lives with her daughter, Regan. As Regan's health declines, she begins exhibiting violent and abnormal behaviors. Medical tests fail to find any physical cause for her condition. The situation escalates when Regan begins speaking in an otherworldly voice. She eventually claims to be the demon Pazuzu.

The film's mechanism for tension relies on the clash between science and faith. Initially, Regan's mother seeks medical help for her daughter. The story shows medical procedures, such as a realistic cerebral angiography.

However, science cannot explain the supernatural phenomena. This leads to the involvement of Father Damien Karras, a psychiatrist. Karras is struggling with a personal crisis of faith. Eventually, the priests decide that a formal exorcism is the only solution. They use the Roman Ritual to attempt to cast out the demon. The climax involves a spiritual battle where Karras ultimately sacrifices himself to save Regan.

Producing the film was a famously difficult and troubled process. The production took twice as long as the original schedule allowed. It also cost almost three times the initial budget. Many members of the cast and crew suffered injuries during filming. Some people even died during the production period. There were many unusual accidents that delayed the work. These many mishaps led to a widespread belief that the film was cursed.

Casting the film required many difficult decisions by Blatty and Friedkin. Many famous Hollywood stars were considered for the lead roles. For the role of Chris MacNeil, actresses like Audrey Hepburn and Jane Fonda were considered. For Father Karras, actors like Jack Nicholson and Paul Newman were discussed. Instead, the creators chose relatively unknown actors. Ellen Burstyn was cast as Chris after expressing a deep connection to the role. Jason Miller was chosen as Karras because his own spiritual history matched the character. Linda Blair was cast as Regan after an unannounced visit by her mother.

Audiences waited in long lines during extremely cold weather to watch it. The film's original theatrical run grossed $193 million. Its lifetime gross reached $441 million due to various re-releases. The film's success was also reflected in major awards. It was the first horror film ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. It received nine total nominations. Blatty won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, and the sound engineers won for Best Sound.

*The Exorcist* remains a central part of the horror genre's history. It held the record as the highest-grossing R-rated horror film for many years. It was only surpassed in 2017 by the film *It*. The film's influence extends into many different areas of pop culture. It is frequently included on lists of the greatest films ever produced. The intense reaction of audiences, including fainting or vomiting, helped cement its reputation. Even today, the "Exorcist steps" remain a recognizable piece of cinematic history.
