Willi Ninja was a famous American dancer and choreographer. He was a master of a dance style called voguing. This dance uses very sharp and clean movements. He did not just dance; he helped create a new way of moving. He took ideas from many different places to build his style. He looked at Olympic gymnasts and even old Egyptian art. He also watched dancers like Fred Astaire and Michael Jackson.

Ninja was the leader of a special group called the House of Ninja. In ball culture, a "house" is like a chosen family. He was known as the "Mother" of his house. This group was a mix of a dance troupe and a social family. The House of Ninja was special because it had many different races in it. Most other houses at that time were African-American. Ninja started his house in 1982. He chose the name because of martial arts and Asian influences.

He spent many years teaching his dance family. They practiced late at night on the Christopher Street pier. They also practiced in underground clubs. Ninja worked very hard to perfect his craft. He was a self-taught dancer. He spent his twenties making his voguing moves even better. He wanted his movements to reach an amazing level of skill.

His talent helped him find great work in the world. He appeared in the famous film *Paris Is Burning*. He also danced in music videos for Janet Jackson. One video was called "Alright." He worked with the designer Jean-Paul Gaultier too. He even taught people how to walk on a fashion runway. In 1989, he starred in a video for the song "Deep in Vogue."

Ninja lived a life full of art and community. He was a member of the LGBT community. He died in 2006 from AIDS-related heart failure. Even after he passed, his work stayed important. People study his art in schools today. They study how he expressed himself through dance. In 2023, Google even made a special art piece to honor him.
