He wrote many different things like poems, short stories, and plays. He also wrote long books called novels and deep studies called essays. People remember him as one of "De Grote Drie," which means "The Big Three." This group included him and two other important Dutch writers, Harry Mulisch and Gerard Reve. His stories often explored how hard it is to truly know the world. He believed that people often misunderstand each other or the things around them. This idea made his writing feel very deep and serious to his readers.

As a young boy in Amsterdam, Hermans spent a lot of time reading.

He loved stories about the legend of King Arthur. He also read books like *Gulliver's Travels* and *Robinson Crusoe* over and over. Even books about science, like the story of Thomas Alva Edison, interested him. He once read a children's Bible with beautiful pictures. He found the stories in the Old Testament very fascinating. These early books helped shape the way he thought about the world.

Hermans went to a famous school called the Barlaeus Gymnasium. In school, he studied many subjects like Latin, French, and Biology. He also learned Greek and German in his later years. He was very smart and even took a harder math class. At first, his grades were not always the best. He once had to repeat a class because he did not work hard enough. After that, he promised himself he would always do his best. Seeing a play called *Antigone* changed his life forever. It showed him that literature could make the everyday world feel different.

After the Second World War, Hermans worked very hard to be a writer.

In 1958, he became a teacher at Groningen University. He taught a subject called physical geography. He stayed there until 1973 when he moved to Paris, France. In Paris, he could focus on writing all day long. He wrote famous books like *The Darkroom of Damocles* in 1958. Another important book was *Beyond Sleep*, which he wrote in 1966. He even won a huge prize called the Prijs der Nederlandse Letteren in 1977.

Many people find his writing style very special and unique. He used short and pointed sentences to make his points clearly. His stories often feel a bit dark or sad. This is because many of his books take place during World War II. He wrote about characters who felt like loners or felt very confused. They often struggled to show people who they really were. Even though his views were sometimes seen as gloomy, he was a master of his craft. His work remains a very important part of Dutch history and culture today.
