This valley is very important to Oregon. About 70 percent of the state's people live here. It is home to five large cities. These cities are Portland, Eugene, Salem, Gresham, and Hillsboro. Many people call it the cultural and political heart of the state.

Long ago, the valley looked very different. Huge floods happened during the last ice age. These floods came from Lake Missoula in Montana. The water swept across Washington and down the Columbia River.

When the water hit jams of logs and ice, it backed up. This filled the whole valley with water. Geologists call this area Lake Allison. The water eventually drained away. It left behind deep layers of very rich soil. This soil makes the valley floor great for growing things.

People have traveled to the valley for a long time. In the 1820s, people called it a "promised land." During the 1800s, many people came in oxen-drawn wagon trains. They traveled along the Oregon Trail to reach this place.
