In the 1860s, most players used a style called "Romantic" chess. This style focused on fast, all-out attacks. In 1873, Steinitz showed a new way to play called the "positional" style. This new method used smart moves to build a strong position. Some people even called his new style "cowardly" at first. However, his style was actually much stronger than the old way. It became the foundation for how people play modern chess today.

His journey to the top included many difficult matches.

In 1866, he played a famous match against Adolf Anderssen in London. Anderssen was considered the strongest player at that time. Steinitz won the match with eight wins and six losses. This victory made many people believe he was the best in the world. He also had a long period where he did not lose a match. From 1862 to 1894, he was unbeaten in match play. This was an amazing feat that lasted for thirty-two years.

Steinitz was also a very busy writer about the game.

He wrote columns for a sports magazine called "The Field." His ideas often caused big arguments with other experts. These bitter fights were known as the "Ink War." One of his biggest rivals was a player named Johannes Zukertort. In 1885, Steinitz started his own magazine called the "International Chess Magazine." He used his writing to defend his new ideas about chess.

Later in life, Steinitz moved to the United States.

He moved to New York City in 1883. He lived there for the rest of his life. Even though he was a great player, he struggled with money. He was not very good at managing his wealth and lived in poverty. He eventually lost his world title to Emanuel Lasker in 1894.
