He was the very first World Chess Champion. He held this title from 1886 to 1894.

Steinitz changed how people play the game. In the 1860s, most players liked to attack fast. This was called the "Romantic" style. Steinitz showed a new way to play.

He used a "positional" style. This means he used smart moves to build a strong spot on the board. Some people thought his new way was cowardly. But his style worked very well. It became the basis for modern chess.

Steinitz was also a famous writer. He wrote about chess in magazines. He even started his own magazine in 1885.

He had many bitter fights with other players. One rival was Johannes Zukertort. These fights over chess ideas were called the "Ink War."

Steinitz moved to New York City in 1883. He lived there for the rest of his life. He was a very important part of chess history.
