The discovery of X-rays happened in November 1895 at the University of Würzburg. Röntgen was studying how electric discharges moved through various vacuum tube apparatuses. He was specifically working with a Lenard tube that had a thin aluminium window. He used a thick black cardboard covering to ensure no light could escape. While the room was dark, he noticed a strange, shimmering glow on a nearby screen. This screen was painted with barium platinocyanide, a substance that reacts to certain radiation. He realized that invisible rays were passing through the heavy cardboard to hit the screen.

Röntgen spent several weeks in his laboratory investigating these mysterious rays. He used the mathematical symbol "X" to name them because they were unknown. He discovered that different materials could stop the rays or let them pass through. When he placed a piece of lead in the path of the rays, he saw shadows. This led to the creation of the first radiographic images. He even saw the flickering, ghostly image of his own skeleton on the screen. He later captured a famous radiograph of his wife Anna Bertha's hand.

His work had a massive impact on the global scientific community. Shortly after his discovery, an Austrian newspaper reported the news in early 1896. Despite his fame, Röntgen remained a very humble man. He chose not to file patents for his discovery of X-rays. He believed that society as a whole should benefit from the practical uses of the rays.
