His son, Peter P. Debye, described his father as being completely apolitical, focusing solely on his scientific duties. In 1939, Debye traveled to the United States to deliver lectures at Cornell University. He eventually left Germany in early 1940 and settled at Cornell permanently. He became an American citizen in 1946 and chaired the chemistry department for ten years. During World War II, his research shifted toward the needs of the war effort. He studied synthetic rubber, which led him to develop light-scattering techniques. These techniques allowed scientists to determine the size and molecular weight of large polymer molecules. This work was later applied to the study of proteins and other macromolecules.
Beyond the laboratory, Debye was a man of diverse interests. He was a faithful Catholic and a dedicated family man. He married Mathilde Alberer in 1913, and they shared a love for gardening. He spent much of his later life working in his rose garden. He was also an avid trout fisherman and a collector of various cacti. Debye passed away in November 1966 following a series of heart attacks. He is buried in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Ithaca, New York.
