Wildebeest

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Wildebeest are large animals that live in Africa. They belong to a family called Bovidae. This group includes cattle, goats, and sheep. There are two main types of wildebeest. One is the blue wildebeest. The other is the black wildebeest.

Blue wildebeest are the larger of the two. They have dark grey coats with stripes. Their horns grow out to the side and then curve up. These animals often move long distances to find grass. This way of moving is called migration.

Black wildebeest are smaller. They have brown hair and cream tails. Their horns curve forward and then down. They do not migrate like the blue kind. Instead, they are nomadic. This means they wander from place to place.

Both kinds live in groups to stay safe. They often graze near zebras. This helps them spot predators. They also listen to baboons for warning signals. Wildebeest calves are very active. They can move with the herd soon after they are born. This helps them survive.
