Wetlands provide many essential ecosystem services that benefit the planet and humans. They act as natural filters by removing excess nutrients like nitrates and phosphorus, which improves water quality. They also help with shoreline stabilization, storm protection, and flood control. Wetlands play a major role in the carbon cycle through carbon fixation and sequestration. Some wetlands act as a carbon sink, helping to mitigate climate change by storing carbon. However, they can also be a source of methane and nitrous oxide emissions due to anaerobic decomposition. 
These ecosystems are found on every continent except Antarctica. Large examples include the Amazon River basin and the West Siberian Plain. The Pantanal in South America and the Sundarbans in the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta are also massive wetland systems. Because they are so important, an international treaty was established in 1971. Despite their importance, wetlands are under significant threat.
