A Western is a type of story about the American frontier. These tales often take place in the "Old West" or "Wild West." This was a time between 1849 and 1890.

The stories usually happen in the Western United States. They can also be set in Northern Mexico or Western Canada. Most Westerns show a land that is hard to live in. You might see dry deserts or huge mountains. People in these stories often deal with themes of freedom and justice. They explore how people tried to tame the wild land.

Characters in these stories follow certain patterns. A main hero is often a man who travels from place to place. He might be a cowboy, a drifter, or a gunslinger.

These men often ride horses and carry a revolver or a rifle. You can recognize them by their clothes. They often wear Stetson hats with wide brims. They also wear neckerchief bandannas, vests, and boots with spurs. Some might even wear buckskins or long dusters. Other people appear too, like sheriffs, outlaws, and settlers. You might see ranch owners, soldiers, or even bartenders in a saloon.

Many Western stories follow a specific way of working. A common plot involves a crime and a chase. The story might end with a shootout or a quick duel.

Frank Gruber identified seven basic ways these stories work. One is a ranch story about protecting a family home. Another is a revenge story about someone seeking justice. There are also stories about building railroads or telegraph lines. Some plots focus on a marshal trying to keep order. Other stories show outlaw gangs taking control. These patterns help tell tales about honor and personal justice.

Westerns became very popular in early movies. The first Western films were short silent movies made in 1894.

They often showed people performing skills from Wild West shows. A very important film was The Great Train Robbery in 1903. This film set a pattern of crime and pursuit for later movies. It helped make Broncho Billy Anderson a famous star. Later, the genre saw a huge rise in popularity. The years from 1940 to 1960 are called the "Golden Age of the Western." During this time, many more Westerns were made than any other kind of movie.

These stories link to ideas we see in other cultures. The wandering cowboy is a lot like a knight from old European tales. Like those knights, he follows his own code of honor. He might even rescue someone in trouble. In Japan, these characters are similar to the ronin.

Westerns also brought certain styles to the whole world. People began to love Western music and Western clothing. This includes country music and styles like rancheras. Even today, the image of the lone hero remains very strong.
