Western China is a vast geographic region located in the western part of the country. It is divided into two primary sub-regions: Southwestern China and Northwestern China.

The Chinese government defines this area through a specific set of administrative divisions. This includes six provinces: Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Gansu, and Qinghai. It also contains three autonomous regions, which are Tibet, Ningxia, and Xinjiang. Additionally, the region includes one direct-administered municipality known as Chongqing.

The region is undergoing a massive shift in how people live. This process is known as urbanization. Under the Xi Jinping administration, China has set a goal to urbanize 250 million citizens by the year 2025. This effort serves as the first phase of a long-term green modernization plan. The strategy involves resettling people who previously lived in rural areas. These citizens are being moved into provincial capitals, prefectural cities, and county-level towns. This movement helps organize the population into more modern living environments.

To support this growth, the government uses specific development policies. One major framework is called the Guiding Opinions of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council. This policy focuses on promoting development in the west during a new era. It aims to form a new pattern for the region's economic structure. A key goal of these opinions is to improve essential industries. For example, the government is working to advance aircraft manufacturing within these western territories.

Infrastructure plays a vital role in connecting this region to the rest of the country. The Belt and Road Initiative is a major project used to build these connections. This initiative develops the infrastructure needed to link western China to other areas. By building better roads and systems, the government seeks to reduce a specific imbalance. Currently, there is a gap between the western regions and the more developed eastern part of China. The initiative helps bridge this divide through improved physical networks.

Western China is home to several massive urban centers. Chongqing is the largest municipality in the region, with a population of 8,894,757.

Chengdu, located in Sichuan, is another major hub with 6,316,922 people. Xi'an in Shaanxi also holds a large population of 5,206,253. Other significant cities with urban populations exceeding one million include Kunming, Ürümqi, Guiyang, and Lanzhou. These cities act as central points for the surrounding provinces and autonomous regions.

Population density and land area vary significantly across these divisions. For instance, the city of Chongqing has a district area of 12,084,385 square kilometers. The city of Chengdu has a district area of 7,415,590 square kilometers. Even smaller urban areas like Yinchuan and Xining have populations over one million. These figures show how much human activity is concentrated in specific parts of the west. The data from the 2010-11-01 census provides a detailed snapshot of these populations.

The development of Western China is tied to broader national systems. The region's growth affects how China manages its land and resources. By focusing on the west, the country attempts to create a more balanced national economy. The combination of urbanization, new infrastructure, and industrial focus defines the region's future. This complex system of policy and movement is reshaping the geography of the entire country.
