It includes famous books, music, philosophy, and art. People in the Western world cherish these works as classics. A classic is any work that is seen as excellent.

Some people call this collection the embodiment of high culture. It is not just one single list of books. Instead, it is a group of works people value deeply. There is no official panel of experts who decide it. It is an idea that people have discussed for a long time.

The word canon comes from an ancient Greek word.

This word means a measuring rod or a standard. In the past, being in a canon was very important. It helped ensure that a book would be kept safe. For example, early Christian leaders chose certain texts to preserve. They did this because making books was very expensive. They used materials like papyrus and vellum to save them. This way, the best information about a civilization stayed alive.

Scholars even used special terms in the ancient Alexandrian Library.

Many schools use these works to teach students.

In the 1920s, a man named John Erskine started a movement. He worked at Columbia University in the United States. He wanted to start Great Books programs to help education. These programs focus on reading primary texts. A primary text is an original work by a thinker. Students might read the "Republic" by Plato.

They might also study the "Divine Comedy" by Dante. These programs often use small classes and group discussions. This helps students build a community of learning together.

Different people have made many different lists of these works.

One famous critic named Harold Bloom wrote about major writers. He included names like William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. He also listed Dante Alighieri and Leo Tolstoy. Another large list was the Modern Library. By the 1950s, that list had more than 300 items. It included authors from Aristotle to Albert Camus.

Some lists are even published as large book collections. These can be found in many different libraries today.

Today, people have many different ideas about the canon.

Some people believe the lists should be more diverse. They want to include more voices from different cultures. They want to include more women and different languages. Others believe the old classics are still very important. They think these works hold universal truths for everyone.

This debate about who decides what is important continues. The process of defining these boundaries never truly ends.
