It is a place where many different lands meet. The province sits next to Turkey and Iraq. It also borders the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Within Iran, it sits near the provinces of East Azerbaijan, Zanjan, and Kurdistan. The map shows how it sits in the corner of the country. The total area is 43,660 square kilometers. This number includes the space taken up by Lake Urmia.

The weather in this region can change quite a bit. In the winter, cold northern winds blow through the land. These winds often bring heavy snow to the province. Temperatures can drop as low as –16 °C in January. However, the summer months feel much warmer. In July, the heat can reach up to 34 °C. The temperature change in winter is about 15 °C. This means the seasons feel very different from one to the other.

This province has a very long and deep history. People have lived in these lands for thousands of years. Some settlements date back to the 6th millennium BC. At a place called Hasanlu, people found a famous golden vase in 1958. Another site, Tepe Hajji Firuz, shows some of the earliest signs of wine making.

This old image shows the region as it was known in the past. Long ago, the area was known by names like Matiene and Vaspurakan.

Many different groups of people call this place home. Most of the people are Azerbaijanis or Kurds. There are also smaller groups of Armenians, Assyrians, and Jews. Different areas have different groups living there. For example, the counties of Bukan and Mahabad are populated by Kurds. Other places like Salmas have both Azerbaijanis and Kurds. Some areas, like Salmas, even have a Christian minority living there.

Urmia is the most important city in the province. It is the capital and the largest city for the people living there. In 2016, Urmia had a population of 736,224 people. Other large cities include Khoy and Bukan. The province has grown in population over the years. In 2006, there were about 2.8 million people. By 2016, that number grew to over 3.2 million people. This shows how the province continues to be a busy place.
