Wendy Carlos is a famous musician. She makes music using electronic machines.

She studied music and physics at college. She also worked with a maker named Robert Moog. Carlos helped him build the Moog synthesizer. This is a keyboard instrument. She gave him many ideas to make it better. She suggested adding keys that react to touch. This helped players control the sound more easily.

In 1968, she released a big album. It was called Switched-On Bach. She played songs by Johann Sebastian Bach on her synthesizer. This album was a huge success. It won her three Grammy Awards.

Making this music was very hard work. Her machine could only play one note at a time. She had to record every single part one by one. She layered these parts on top of each other. She spent over 1,100 hours on this project!

Carlos also wrote music for movies. She worked on films like Tron and The Shining. In 1979, she spoke openly about being transgender. She had lived as a woman since 1968. She helped more people understand this topic.
