It was made in the Soviet Union. The director was Andrei Tarkovsky. He wanted to show deep feelings in space stories. He thought many space films focused too much on new machines. This film is based on a book by Stanisław Lem.

The story follows a man named Kris Kelvin. He travels to a station near a planet called Solaris. The planet has a huge ocean. The scientists on the station are having a hard time. Kelvin meets a woman named Hari. She looks like his wife who died years ago. The ocean made her from his own memories. She is not a real human, but she thinks and feels.

The movie uses beautiful art to tell its story.

You can see old paintings on the walls of the station. These include works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The music is also very special. It uses sounds made by Eduard Artemyev. Many people call this one of the best space films ever made.
