A weather radio is a special kind of radio receiver. It is made to listen to public broadcast services. These services usually come from government-owned radio stations. They share weather forecasts and reports all day and night.

Sometimes, these stations share other emergency news too. This might include news about natural disasters or child abduction alerts. This tool is very important for staying safe during bad weather.

These radios work using a special way to alert people. Most have a standby alerting function. This means the radio can listen even if it is muted. If a severe weather bulletin is sent, the radio can wake up. It might sound a loud alarm or switch to a specific channel.

Many modern radios use SAME, which stands for Specific Area Message Encoding. This technology lets the radio listen only for alerts in your local area. It uses six-digit codes to know exactly which county or zone needs help.

Scientists and government workers built these systems over many years. In the United States, NOAA Weather Radio is a huge network. It has more than 1,000 radio stations working together.

These stations broadcast directly from National Weather Service offices. In Canada, Weatheradio Canada used 234 sites to share news in English and French. This service was permanently discontinued on March 16, 2026. Other places like Mexico have built their own systems, such as SARMEX.

There are many specific facts about how these stations talk. They use a radio band called VHF-FM. In North America, they often use seven main frequencies. These range from 162.400 MHz to 162.550 MHz.

Some stations use a 1,050 Hz attention tone to get your attention. This tone happens right before a warning is given. In the U.S., Canada, and Bermuda, this tone helps older radios start working. The broadcast cycles are usually between 3 and 8 minutes long.

Weather radios are helpful for many different kinds of people. Some models are made to stay at home near a wall plug. Other models are portable for people who go hiking or camping.

Portable radios might even have a hand crank for power or a flashlight. Large ships at sea also use weather radio services to avoid dangerous storms. This helps keep the sailors and their passengers safe on the water.
