Water Margin is a preeminent classic Chinese novel from the Ming dynasty.

It is also known by the titles Outlaws of the Marsh or All Men Are Brothers. The book is a masterpiece of early vernacular fiction. This means it was written in the common spoken language of Mandarin Chinese. The story is set around 1120 during the Northern Song dynasty. It follows a group of 108 outlaws who gather at Mount Liang.

This location is also called Liangshan Marsh. The outlaws rebel against the government to seek justice for the people.

The plot functions through a series of individual character arcs that eventually merge. The story begins with the release of 108 spirits from an ancient tortoise. These spirits are the incarnations of 108 stars of destiny. They are divided into 36 heavenly spirits and 72 earthly demons.

In the story, these celestial beings are reborn on Earth as heroes. The narrative follows characters like Lin Chong, who is framed by the corrupt Grand Marshal Gao Qiu. It also follows the "Original Seven" led by Chao Gai. They rob a convoy of birthday gifts intended for the Imperial Tutor Cai Jing. Eventually, Song Jiang succeeds Chao Gai as the leader after a battle at the Zeng Family Fortress.

Characters in the novel represent many different roles in society. Some members of the 108 heroes are military personnel. Others are civil officials who grew tired of serving a corrupt government. Many individuals join the group because they possess special skills or unique talents.

Famous characters include the powerful Wu Song and the monk Lu Zhishen. The group grows as more people join their cause at the marsh. This gathering creates a large, organized band of rebels. Their strength comes from their diverse abilities and shared goal of justice.

The history of the novel's creation is a subject of academic debate. While authorship is traditionally attributed to Shi Nai'an, who lived from 1296 to 1372, evidence is complex. The first external reference to the novel appeared in 1524 during the Jiajing reign of the Ming dynasty. This gap in records makes scholars wonder when the book was actually written. They also investigate which historical events inspired the author. Some believe the book grew from folk tales like Old Incidents in the Xuanhe Period. These tales described treacherous ministers who caused great suffering to the people.

Many characters in the novel likely have roots in real historical figures. The outlaw Song Jiang was a real person recorded in the History of Song.

Scholars like Wang Liqi suggest that the hero Shi Jin was inspired by a rebel leader named Shi Bin. Another character, Xie Bao, might be based on a minor rebel from Jizhou. The antagonist Fang La is also believed to be based on a real-life rebel. Even the setting of Mount Liang is a real marshland that existed during the Song dynasty. This blend of legend and history gives the story deep resonance.

The significance of the novel is seen in its tragic conclusion and its wide influence. After a great battle, the outlaws receive amnesty from Emperor Huizong. This amnesty means the government officially forgives them. They are enlisted to fight the Liao dynasty invaders and other rebels.

However, these campaigns lead to the dissolution of the 108 heroes. At least two-thirds of the heroes die in battle. Song Jiang is eventually poisoned by the "Four Treacherous Ministers." This tragic end highlights the cost of their struggle against corruption.

Water Margin has had a massive impact on East Asian literature. It exerted a significant influence on the development of fiction in Japan.
