War and Peace is a famous book by the Russian author Leo Tolstoy.

It is a massive work that explores life during the Napoleonic Wars. This was a time when France invaded Russia. The book follows five different Russian families through these changing times. These families are the Bezukhovs, the Bolkonskys, the Rostovs, the Kuragins, and the Drubetskoys.

Tolstoy did not think this was just a simple novel. He said it was not quite a poem or a history book either. Instead, it mixes a fictional story with big ideas about history and philosophy. It is now seen as one of the greatest books ever written.

The book works by using several different layers of storytelling. One layer follows the personal lives of many characters. For example, Pierre Bezukhov is a socially awkward man who inherits a huge fortune.

Another layer follows the movements of great armies and leaders. The story moves through many real historical events. These include the Battle of Austerlitz and the occupation of Moscow. The book also includes long essays about power and how history works. These essays are woven directly into the story of the characters.

Tolstoy began writing this great work in 1863.

He started writing after he married and settled at his country estate. He wanted to find real details about how people lived back then. He even asked his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Bers, to help him find old diaries and records. An earlier version of the book was called The Year 1805. This version was published in parts between 1865 and 1867. However, Tolstoy was not happy with how it turned out. He decided to rewrite the entire book to make it better.

Writing the final version was a huge task for the author and his family.

Tolstoy's wife, Sophia Tolstaya, helped him by copying seven different complete manuscripts by hand. The finished version was finally published in 1869. This version had a very different ending than the earlier parts. The book is very long and is split into four volumes. It contains fifteen different books and a two-part epilogue. There are about 160 real people mentioned in the text. Many people in Russia bought the complete book as soon as it arrived.

Tolstoy used special ways to make the reader feel like they were there. His writing is often compared to a movie. He uses details that work like a camera's wide shot or a close-up.

He also used both the Russian and French languages. At that time, many rich Russians spoke French in their daily lives. As the story goes on, the characters start using more Russian. This shows how Russia was changing during the wars. Today, the book is translated into many languages like English, French, and Korean.
