Wang's journey began in Shanghai, where he was born on October 6, 1955. His parents were in the Red Army and fought in a big war. When he was a boy, his father made him and his brothers stay inside to read. This helped him develop a very calm personality. He studied French at a special training class starting in 1972. Later, he went to Fudan University to study international politics. He was a very bright student and earned a Master of Laws in 1981.

He became a famous professor at Fudan University very quickly. In 1985, at only 29 years old, he became an associate professor. This made him the youngest person in China to reach that rank. He wrote nearly 80 articles by the end of that year. He also traveled to the United States in 1988. During that trip, he visited over 30 cities and 20 different universities.

Wang has held high jobs under three different top leaders. This is a very rare thing in Chinese politics. He worked with Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao, and now Xi Jinping. In 1995, he began working at the Central Policy Research Office. He stayed there for a very long time. In 2017, he became a member of the Politburo Standing Committee.
