It was written by Henry David Thoreau and published in 1854. The book is a collection of his thoughts and experiences. Thoreau lived a very simple life in the woods to learn about himself. He wanted to see if he could thrive without extra luxuries. This was a social experiment to see how a person lives. He wanted to find a way to be truly independent.

His cabin was an English-style cottage. It was only 10 by 15 feet in size. He used many materials to build it. He used boards, shingles, and one thousand old bricks. He also used two casks of lime and some second-hand windows. He even carried some of the materials on his back.

He kept very careful notes on how much everything cost. This helped him show how to live with very little.

His time at the pond began on July 4, 1845. He stayed in the woods until September 6, 1847. This was a stay of two years, two months, and two days.

Thoreau lived on land owned by his mentor, Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson lived near Concord, Massachusetts. While living there, Thoreau also wrote his first book. That book was called A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers. He published that work in 1849. His experiences at the pond shaped his entire way of thinking.

Thoreau was a very careful observer of the world around him. He wrote down the scientific names of many plants and animals. He watched how the pond froze and thawed each year. He even tried to measure how deep the pond was. He looked at the color and clarity of the water.

He listened to many different sounds in the woods. He heard church bells, cows, and owls. He even heard the singing of whip-poor-wills. These details helped him describe the beauty of the wild.

Walden connects to many big ideas about how we live. Thoreau used the four seasons to show how humans grow. He thought about how we use money and goods. He also wrote about how we treat other living things. He believed that nature could help people understand society better. Even though he lived alone, he often had visitors. He always kept three chairs ready for his friends. His life shows how much joy can be found in simplicity.
