Many people call him the "Father of the Blues." He did not invent the blues genre itself. Instead, he helped make the music very popular. He was one of the first to publish blues music in print. This helped the music move from small areas to a huge audience. His songs changed how people heard American music forever.

Handy found music in many different places.

He listened to the sounds of nature. He loved the calls of owls and songbirds. He also found rhythm while working at a furnace. There, he used a shovel to make music with other workers. They beat their shovels against hard surfaces in complex rhythms. He said these sounds were better than a drum corps.

Handy had a very busy early life.
