Lewis developed a famous idea called the "dual-sector model." He called this the "Lewis model" in a 1954 paper. He described a poor country as having two distinct parts. The first is the traditional or subsistence sector. This sector is largely agricultural and relies on informal social norms. The second is the modern capitalist sector. This sector focuses on industrial growth and factory production. The model explains how these two parts interact to create change.

In the Lewis model, the traditional sector has a surplus of labor. This means there are more workers than there are jobs in farming. Because there is so much labor, the capitalist sector can grow easily. It can hire these extra workers without needing to raise wages immediately. This process allows capitalists to earn higher returns on their money. They then reinvest these profits back into their businesses. This reinvestment leads to more capital accumulation and more jobs. Eventually, the extra labor is absorbed into the modern sector. This transition point is known as the Lewisian turning point. At this stage, the balance of power shifts toward the workers.

Lewis's life was marked by many significant achievements and obstacles. He was born in Castries, Saint Lucia, in 1915. His father died when Arthur was only seven years old. His mother, Ida Lewis, raised five sons by herself. Arthur was a very gifted student and finished school at age 14. He originally wanted to be an engineer. However, he found that white firms would not employ a black engineer. He decided to study business and law instead. In 1932, he earned a scholarship to the London School of Economics. He was the first black individual accepted there. He later became the first black faculty member at that school.

His career took him to many important academic positions. In 1947, he became a lecturer at the Victoria University of Manchester. He was Britain's first black lecturer and became a full professor in 1948. Later, he moved to the United States to teach at Princeton University. He was the first black instructor to receive a full professorship there. He held the title of James Madison Professor of Political Economy. He also served as the Chancellor of the University of Guyana from 1966 to 1973. Lewis was a deeply respected figure in the global academic community.

Lewis used his expertise to help many new nations. As former colonies gained independence, they needed economic guidance. He served as an advisor to Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and Barbados. In 1957, he was the first economic advisor to Ghana. He helped create their first Five-Year Development Plan for 1959 to 1963. He also helped establish the Caribbean Development Bank. In 1970, he became its very first president. His work helped shape the economies of the Caribbean and Africa.

His writings explored many different social and political ideas. In his 1939 book, he wrote about the labor movement in the Caribbean. He is now seen as an early supporter of reparations for colonial wrongs. In 1965, he wrote about politics in West Africa. He argued that the "winner-takes-all" political model might not work there. He suggested that power-sharing through coalition governments would be better. This was because many African states are divided by linguistic and tribal lines. Lewis believed institutional design could help maintain democracy in these regions.

Today, the legacy of Arthur Lewis remains very strong. His face appears on the East Caribbean 100-dollar bill. Many schools and buildings are named in his honor. The Sir Arthur Lewis Community College is located in Saint Lucia. The University of Manchester holds annual lectures in his name. His personal papers are kept at Princeton University for researchers. He passed away in 1991 in Barbados. His ideas continue to help scholars understand economic development today.
